While some areas of the UK are fortunate enough to have low mineral, soft water, around 60% of the UK is classed as having hard or very hard water – mainly throughout central, eastern and southern England. The hardness will depend on where you live. Hard water has higher levels of calcium and magnesium. These minerals can be very harsh on your clothes, skin and plumbing.

By removing these minerals to create softened water you will benefit from less irritated, smoother skin. Towels, clothes and fabrics that go through the washing machine will feel softer, cleaner and whites will stay whiter for longer. Calcium and magnesium contribute to the scale build-up you see in your pipes. Softened water will reduce scale-related plumbing issues.

The benefits of softened water extend across your family, your home, and the planet – read more by visiting our range of resources. It can save you money on your heating, maintenance and washing products, as well as saving water.

It’s not usually necessary to have a water filter unless you want to improve the taste and smell of your water.

Installing a water softener can be difficult, as its location can vary from building to building. That’s why EcoWater’s local experts are on hand to help with everything that you need to ensure you are provided with long-lasting soft water.

Hard water contains dissolved hardness minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, above 100 parts per million (PPM). With it being a rather broad spectrum, we can abide by the following metrics:

  • Anything less than 100 PPM is considered to be soft to moderately soft
  • Anything above 100 PPM but less than 200 PPM is considered to slightly to moderately hard
  • Anything above 200 PPM is considered hard or very hard
  • Anything above 350 PPM is considered to be aggressively hard

Affecting over half of all homes in the UK, hard water can cost you a lot of money as you have you use more water, replace your appliances more frequently and can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema. You can discover the level of water hardness in your area using our online tool.
