What is a reverse osmosis water filter?

A reverse osmosis water filter removes impurities from your water supply to give you great-tasting water. It removes a variety of impurities from harmful chemicals to microbes, and can improve the taste and odour of your water. In short, it's the perfect way to get crystal clear water every time you turn on the tap. Household water flows through a prefilter, which removes sediment, chlorine taste and odour, and particulate matter.

It is then forced through a semi-permeable membrane where most of the impurities are removed and flushed into the drain.

After this, your filtered water is reserved in the storage tank until its needed, so you have filtered water on demand all day every day so there's no need for those plastic bottles we all want to avoid.

Just before the water heads to your tap, it goes through an activated carbon absorption block filter, which removes any last unwanted tastes and odours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reverse osmosis is a technique where water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane at high pressure. This membrane allows water to pass through it, but the contaminants and impurities in the water cannot pass through it. This means that the water is purified and the taste and smell of the water are improved by this process.

How Reverse Osmosis Water Filters Work
Diagram showing how reverse osmosis water filters work

To an extent, reverse osmosis does create waste water due to the way the impurities are removed and sent down the drain. A small amount of water is also sent with them, but reverse osmosis technologies are improve all the time to create more efficient systems that create less waste. .

Reverse osmosis water filters are quite quiet, with the only sound you might hear being the waste water going down the drain. This is often described as a gurgling sound. If your water filter starts making other noises, you should contact your local expert for advice.

Reverse osmosis water filters don’t use electricity or chemicals in the filtration process, so the ongoing costs amount to the maintenance of the machine and replacing the membrane when necessary. This means that it is a low-cost, low effort way of improving the quality of the water in your home.

Different membranes will last different amounts of time in different houses, depending on the water pressure, water temperature, how much water is being filtered and how high the level of contaminants is. We expect the membranes to last around 2 years, however, before they need replacing, but this may vary depending on the specific circumstances in your area.

A reverse osmosis water filter will remove impurities and contaminants including, but not limited to:

  • Sodium
  • Sulphate
  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Nitrate
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Mercury
  • Phosphate
  • Lead
